R&D NESTER (Centro de Investigação em Energia REN – State Grid, S.A) is an energy research center that comes from REN, the Portuguese TSO, and State Grid Corporation of China’s (SGCC) will to synergize core competences and create an R&D centre, in order to promote and implement applied research, development, demonstration and testing, in an international environment, innovating for a smarter energy system.
R&D Nester has been in operation since July 2013 with facilities in Lisbon, Portugal. We are an R&D center certified in innovation, quality and environment and recognised in the field of R&D for the technical-scientific knowledge domain of conception and energy grid field solutions development by the Ministry of Science and Education and by the Ministry of Economy. Benefiting from R&D NESTER’s shareholders structure of global power sector industry, the in-house expertise combines extensive industry hands-on experience, besides strong academic background. At R&D NESTER we are fully engaged with tomorrow’s clean energy systems, applying leading edge technologies and disruptive solutions towards more efficient, reliable and economic power systems. R&D NESTER acts on three independent vectors: Research, development, innovation and demonstration in the area of energy systems; Consulting services in the scope of R&D activities; Education and training services.
The R&D NESTER plays an active role in different stages of the R&D value chain from participation in applied research projects to the development of ready-to-market technologies. The main research fields are focused in Renewable energy management; Power systems simulation; Smart grid technologies; Network planning and operation; Energy markets and economics. R&D NESTER owns and operates a Real Time Power System Simulation (RTPSS) Laboratory, ideal to leverage R&D NESTER core competences through state-of-the-art technologies.
It enables the simulation and testing of both power systems and communication networks, either in a stand-alone mode or by performing co-simulation. The laboratory is listed in the EU Joint Research Centre Smart Grids Laboratories Inventory. Several of the results obtained are currently deployed in operational environment and published in multiple IEEE, CIGRE and other high reputation entities’ documentation. As part of R&D Nester strategy, several projects are being developed in partnership with other national and international organizations. R&D Nester is a regular participant to the EU Horizon2020 R&D funding program projects, and also has projects with the European Space Agency (ESA), the EU INTERREG program, among others. R&D Nester is also an active participant on several European and international innovation networks, such as CIGRÉ, IEEE, ETIP-SNET, EU Working Groups and ENTSO-E.
