H.E Hon. João Pedro Matos Fernandes
Minister of Environment and Energy Transition, Portugal
Mr. Matos Fernandes is Portugal’s Minister of the Environment. He served as President of the Governing Board of the water management company Águas do Porto (2014-2015); Advisor to the Governing Board of Terminais do Norte and Portos do Norte; Director of the Port of Nacala, Mozambique (2012-2013); President of the Association of Portuguese Ports (2008-2010); Chairman of the Governing Board of Viana do Castelo Port (2009-2012); Chairman of the Governing Board of Douro and Leixões ports; Administrator of Quatenaire Portugal, Consulting for Development, and coordinator of works of urban and organisational strategy, spatial planning and environmental issues (1999-2005); Head of the Cabinet - Secretary of State for Environment (1997-1999); Advisor to the Secretary of State - Natural Resources (1995-1997). He worked in the Northern Region Coordination Commission (Spatial Planning) coordinating the transport sector (1990-1995).
He has also been a Professor of the Instituto Superior Técnico (infrastructures) and of the Instituto Superior de Transportes (Energy and Environmental Impacts of Transport). He was also a visiting professor at the Universities of Oporto, Lisbon, and Naples.
He graduated in Civil Engineering (field - Spatial Planning) at Oporto University and holds a Master degree in Transportation from the Instituto Superior Técnico, in Lisbon.
