About

Mr. Matos Fernandes is Portugal’s Minister of the Environment. He served as President of the Governing Board of the water management company Águas do Porto (2014-2015); Advisor to the Governing Board of Terminais do Norte and Portos do Norte; Director of the Port of Nacala, Mozambique (2012-2013); President of the Association of Portuguese Ports (2008-2010); Chairman of the Governing Board of Viana do Castelo Port (2009-2012); Chairman of the Governing Board of Douro and Leixões ports; Administrator of Quatenaire Portugal, Consulting for Development, and coordinator of works of urban and organisational strategy, spatial planning and environmental issues (1999-2005); Head of the Cabinet - Secretary of State for Environment (1997-1999); Advisor to the Secretary of State - Natural Resources (1995-1997). He worked in the Northern Region Coordination Commission (Spatial Planning) coordinating the transport sector (1990-1995). He has also been a Professor of the Instituto Superior Técnico (infrastructures) and of the Instituto Superior de Transportes (Energy and Environmental Impacts of Transport). He was also a visiting professor at the Universities of Oporto, Lisbon, and Naples. He graduated in Civil Engineering (field - Spatial Planning) at Oporto University and holds a Master degree in Transportation from the Instituto Superior Técnico, in Lisbon.
